GARRETT BUDDS

Our Charleston Leader / Ambassador

Director of Conservation Strategy / Lowcountry Land Trust

Garrett has engaged in conservation work at the national, regional and local scale. Prior to joining Lowcountry Land Trust (LLT), Garrett served as Conservation Director at Beaufort Open Land Trust (SC). He has worked for the National Wildlife Federation (Northern Rockies Region), the Clark Fork Coalition (MT) and was Director of the Coastal Conservation League’s South Coast Office (SC).

At LLT, Garrett and the Conservation Team continue to grow and diversify the organization’s protected land portfolio, including several recent collaborative mitigation and community conservation projects that highlight and protect the region’s unique cultural and ecological landscape. These projects have both restored and conserved thousands of acres in critical Lowcountry environs. Currently, Garrett is leading the organization’s effort to facilitate and implement a regional conservation vision for the South Carolina Lowcountry.

Garrett earned his B.A. in History and M.S. in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana, and his J.D. and Certificate in Environmental & Natural Resource Law from the University of Montana School of Law. Garrett’s wife Katie manages a sea island horse farm, where the couple spends time with animals both large and small. Along with their adventurous son Heyward and daughter Darby, they enjoy activities that keep them closely tied to the natural world.

Mission Statement: I am honored to be accompanying Robert Swan and Team 2041 on the International Antarctic Expedition 2016. This adventure provides an invaluable and unparalleled opportunity to better understand global connectivity and the impacts of climate change. I hope the experience will provide a platform from which our region can learn, and will begin a dialogue around how we can craft a more resilient future for our environment – both built and natural.
